Description
Are you a potter wanting to experiment with this technique but don’t know where to start? Well, this is a rough guide to making coloured clay to get you going!
Coloured clay is used to create a dizzying array of patterns. Think marbling or agateware, nerikome or just on its own. Imagine a bright yellow or pink pot! You can see some of my own coloured clay creations below as examples of what you can achieve.

My advice before starting:
- buy a set of scales that measure parts of grams as you’ll see in the video
- use white clay like porcelain for best bright colours and contrasts
- ensure your clay is soft because firm clay will cause separation cracks with your coloured clay
- keep your coloured clay pieces wrapped in a damp chux cloth and a plastic bag
- remember to write the clay type and percentage of colour added
- make sure the stain is totally mixed through the clay for best results
- test, test and play because you won’t know unless you have a go!
